They did little to assist Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnel in Delaware. They supported leftists like Dede Scozzafava and Arlen Specter and others of the same liberal bent with generous donations. They have been reluctant to defend Sarah Palin against unending cowardly smears from the left. Not surprisingly, this has got a lot of Conservative’s and Tea Partier’s backs up. The need is for Conservatives to govern according to Constitutional Principles. If that objective cannot be achieved through the Republican party and the RNC in particular, then those two entities will receive no support from the Tea Party or Conservatives.
The strategy that Tea Partiers have adopted is to bypass the RNC, or in a way, set up an alternative governing committee. The Tea Party will approve candidates and give money directly to them rather than through the RNC, thereby avoiding the likely risk of the money being diverted to support RINOs. This is a move that has had some pretty devastating effects on the RNC’s ability to raise money, especially as under previous Chairman Michael Steel they appeared to care very little for the concerns of Conservatives and The Tea Partiers.
Before he failed to gain enough votes for re-election, Steel reported the RNC was in debt for $15 million. The incoming Chairman, Reince Priebus, has revised that debt. According to figures released a couple of days ago the true figure is $23 million. As any politician will tell you, trying to raise money to pay off debt is about as hard as it gets.
The whole situation presents an interesting scenario in respect of the upcoming election and selection of the Republican candidate. Any hint that the RNC is going to continue as in the past will see its own coffers depleted further and more money funneled directly to Tea Party candidates. Any RNC support for known RINOS like Romney, Huckabee or Gingrich will mean a major schism on the right, even to the extent that a third party could be formed. This of course will most likely mean the re-election of Obama, but most Tea Partiers would prefer this to letting the RNC and the Republican Party do as they have done in the past. The excessive compromising with the left has to end and governance according to constitutional principles must be the outcome. The Republican Party must understand that message.
The new Chair, Reince Priebus, is an unknown factor. The jury is still out on his Conservative credentials. The big factor though is the Tea Party, far more powerful than the mainstream media will admit, and either a supporter of the RNC or a rival depending upon which way the Committee goes. Either way, its not looking good for RINOs in 2012. Long past time though the swine were got rid of. You can’t properly defeat the Democrats when they have a fifth column in the Republicans.
New Gallup poll- About 7 in 10 national adults, including 88% of Republicans, say it is important that Republican leaders in Congress take the Tea Party movement’s positions and objectives into account as they address the nation’s problems. Among Republicans, 53% rate this “very important.”

Further to Sinner’s point – it would be good to see some reform around ballot access in the US…

If the names Huckabee, Romney, Gingrich etc keep coming up, that will show that the GOP STILL hasn’t understood how far there is yet to go.
