A number of ME and Asian newspapers are running the following press release reputedly from Al Qaeda. I find it hard to believe myself, as the rational behind Al Qaeda releasing such a story is difficult to understand. What exactly is the point? That Bin Laden’s group is skilled and capable of detecting highly technical US anti-terrorist devices? That Bin Laden is alive? That the US have failed again? The article is in the Gulf Times, one of the largest newspapers in the region. Its also featuring in some English papers.
Attempt to assassinate bin Laden thwarted: Qaeda
An alleged assassination attempt on Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was thwarted a month ago, an operative of the shadowy organisation claimed. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has fixed a head money of $25mn on bin Laden and American forces are searching for him and Taliban supreme leader Mullah Omar for the past nine years. “The US forces used a device that could transmit signals to satellite for conducting an air strike on bin Laden. The Al Qaeda leadership is proud of its technical wing that discovered a 5mm chip fixed in a USB device meant to reach our leader for an interview,” Abu Al-Fatah, an Al Qaeda operative, said.

Nah….I reckon it’s just a PR job to foster the myth of the untouchable bin liner. Using a USB device as a target illuminator? Possible, but there are better ways to do it.

You’re looking for reasoning why al-qaeda would release this information..?
Reasoning from people who think blowing themselves and 3,000 other people up carries with it a reward of 80 virgins in the afterlife..?

Jeremy, the leaders of islamist movements are pretty politically aware and they know how to manipulate the media.
And for all the idiocy of the reward of ‘virgins in paradise’, you don’t see many imams volunteering to strap on a bomb belt, do you? That’s for gullible, frustrated youths.
