Donald Trump as President? What about the “Gravitas”?

I remember Karl Rove or some other such RINO sell out making the point that in doing the TV show “Sarah Palin’s Alaska”, Mrs Palin had put her ability to win the Presidency further in doubt because it somehow diminished her “gravitas”, evidently an important component in becoming a President.

I would have thought if gravitas was a serious issue, the last person we’d be thinking of as President would be Donald Trump. He walks around looking like he’s got a bleached animal’s carcass on his head. He was patron and star of a silly reality show that IMHO has a threshold of dignity far below that of Sarah Palin’s Alaska. He has also made appearances as a caricatured version of himself in television series and films- Home Alone 2, Lost in New York, The Nanny, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Days of our Lives. Mostly the worst kind of trashy entertainment.

Trump is a known World Wrestling Entertainment fan. He has hosted two WrestleMania events in the Trump Plaza and has been an active participant in several of the shows. World Wrestling is well known for its gravitas.

In 1977, Trump married Ivana Zelničkova and together they have three children. They were divorced in 1992. In 1993, he married Marla Maples. They divorced on June 8, 1999. In January 2005, he married Melania Knauss, Trump’s junior by 24 years. Three wives, one who is 24 years younger. Even more gravitas.

After a good start in property development, Trump bought the Taj Mahal Casino from the Crosby family, then took it into bankruptcy. Further unwise expansion, both personal and business, led to mounting debt. Trump Hotels has been forced to seek voluntary bankruptcy protection to stay afloat. After the company applied for Chapter 11 Protection in November 2004, Trump was forced out as CEO.

In October 2007, Trump appeared on Larry King Live and delivered a strong criticism of then-United States President George W. Bush, particularly concerning the Iraq War. He also predicted that Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton would win the Republican and Democratic Presidential nominations, respectively, and said that he would be very supportive of either of them being elected President.

On the plus side? He’s pro life, anti both gun control and foreign aid, and has a realistic perspective on China. Nevertheless, I find it gob smacking that people who say that Sarah Palin lacks gravitas or is “unqualified” to be President are prepared to gush over the Donald. In pure respectability, the hard working down to earth never divorced mother of five children has to be a light years ahead of Trump.

Finally though, how can anyone supporting the Republican party seriously consider also supporting someone who gave $50,000 to Obama’s good buddy and recently retired second Lieutenant, Rahm “never let a good crisis go to waste” Emanuel in his campaign for Mayor of Chicago? Trump as President of the USA would just be a joke, and more a sick joke one than a funny one.

The Don’s start in property was actually care of his Dad, who (from memory) left him about $40,000,000 worth of apartments in NY…

He brought massively into Casino’s via leverage and in the 90s was in almost unprecented debt, (one story goes that he was walking past Grand Central Terminal with his daughter and pointed at a homeless guy and said, “She that guy, he has $9,000,000,000 more than me”), the bank essentially rode out his debt to save their assets… Since then he seems to have gotten the hang of property and now seeks to invest in commercial real estate and golf courses with future sub-division potential, he also still owns apartments from memory and licences the Trump name to buidings (which is as safe as a business deal gets), so he has a successful business, providing quality office and residential space and, um, golf…

    But socially……

He’s been married over and over, and who knows how many stories about womanising would come out in a campaign, there have been public spats with other celebrities, his “entertainment” career – when combined with his past financial mistakes, I don’t think he can run or not for long…

It is – and always will be – about the Don, he wouldn’t last more than a few primaries IMHO… His son on the other hand, Don Jr, seems like a man of higher quality than him…

I hope Trump runs and gives the Raepublican stablishment a run for its money. The likes of Gingrich, Guliani and Huckabee should give way to better candidates.

Like him or not, if one candidate has a chance to defeat the useless Obama and become POTUS is Romney.
