General Debate 25/02/11

Item 1

Recently Democrat media agents (sometimes referred to as journalists) have taken to asking Republican Senators and House Representatives their positions on Obama’s Constitutional eligibility. The idea is that the Republicans will be forced to either commit to the cause, and therefore risk ridicule, or reject it, and therefore alienate a large sector of their support base. Joseph Farrar has written a good article on the issue, and includes a suggested response for Republicans who get questioned. How to handle the “birther question.”

Item 2

Brisbane drivers cast judgment on toll roads.

ONE of Queensland’s largest initial public offerings, Rivercity Motorway, has collapsed, owing $1.3 billion. The board of Rivercity, led by chairman Robert Morris, is expected to appoint PPB as administrators to the company, with Korda Mentha expected to act as receivers for the lenders.

Rivercity, which operates Brisbane’s Clem Jones tunnel, needed all of its two dozen lenders to agree to a standstill on interest payments on its $1.3 billion loan by 5pm today. But it is believed not all lenders granted the reprieve. The Clem Jones tunnel has been in operation for less than a year and yet has needed to draw on cash reserves to meet costs as traffic-volume fell far short of forecasts.

Rivercity’s initial traffic forecasts predicted the road would carry 60,000 vehicles a day and that this could increase to 100,000 within 18 months. But traffic volumes are closer to 20,000 vehicles, despite initial moves to discount the toll by as much as 50 per cent to encourage motorists.

A few weeks ago I was of the opinion that Beck was slipping a bit, but the last two weeks he has upped his game again, calling out the forces at work in the middle east and elsewhere.

On another note, I am wondering whether we are seeing an uprising where the ordinary citizen is gradually coming to the point of simply not accepting the whole PC socialist system anymore.

Some maybe. Outside the internet, there is little real resistance.

I thought this birth cert answer was so good it needed reproduction:

“I don’t know what the facts are regarding Barack Obama’s early life because he has made it a point to withhold virtually all documentation that would be meaningful to support his story. Obviously Obama has a very big credibility problem in this area with the American people. Polls show most Americans don’t believe his story. A dozen states are working on legislation to ensure we don’t have questions of eligibility plaguing the nation after the next election. But understand this is not a problem of my creation. This is a problem of Obama’s creation. It’s up to him to persuade the nation of his story, not me. I would also suggest it’s not up to you as a journalist. Do I think it’s a healthy thing that most Americans don’t believe Obama’s birth story? No, I don’t. But even his good friend, Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie, seems terribly frustrated that Obama won’t simply reveal the documentary evidence that might clear up all these questions. So why don’t you ask Obama why he isn’t more forthcoming? Don’t we like it in America when our leaders are open, honest and transparent? Isn’t that the kind of administration Obama promised?”

On a sadder note – and I’m not sure whether I should write this but – is it just me or are others starting to become frustrated with the focus of the media in Christchurch..? It seems to be dominated by stories of the death count, the potential death count, the oldest casualty, the youngest casualty, the amputations, etc, etc… I have never experienced anything like what they are going through, God willing I never will, but I assume the overwhelming majority of the events currently happening consist of; feelings of grief and defeat but also of charity, hope, hard work, selflessness and faith… Not just a morbid fixation on death…

I don’t really know Jeremy, and it’s extremely difficult to actually form an opinion, because there is such a dearth of information about what is actually happening on the ground. I confess to sometimes having the sinking feeling that the thing is being “over-managed” and that insufficient use may be made of the enormous capacity for help and reconstruction that could be unleashed by freeing up the stranglehold that “officials” hold over what is actually being done.
That feeling may well be caused by the media focus that you describe. It’s just too hard to know. For me an example was that Trademe had a system up where people could offer help with housing etc within hours, while the government is now doing everything to push it’s own website for that. How many officials have we got feeding off this thing, which could be solved by giving private initiatives a freer reign. It seems like the “solution” being promoted is one of an overall tax or levy, while many people would rather get involved and actually do something tangible, and do it quick. The government and its structures are never the ultimate solution to any problem, and this may well be another example. There is a role for government in all of this for sure, but I doubt whether the proper role is one where they become the sole conduit for anything that is undertaken. I wish we knew more, a bit like in the Pike River disaster.
