It is also important to remember that those entitlement programmes that you highlight are legislated for and expected to climb rapidly over the next 20 – 30 years with the US’s ageing population, if the US was a company it would be insolvent and liquidators would be taking emergency measures…
According to my calculations if the US ran a Constitutional Budget, namely eliminated Social Security tax and entitlement programmes, their budget would look like this:
Revenue: $1,320 bn
Expenses: $1,470 bn
Deficit: $150 bn
So even if they cut off all entitlements they’d still be in deficit and with the interest on the debt increasing it gets harder every year… The individual states are just as bad and many of the municipalities…
The US is properly screwed financially and only the Tea Party can save em now…

I wonder why the corporate income tax is so low? It’s a bit of a worry that Net Interest Payments are greater than the entire corporate income tax. Not that I would recommend increasing taxes, Jeremy has already pointed out the solution.

US corporate taxes are already at the highest nominal rate in the Western World, however if you’ve ever had a look at the US tax code it is incomprehensible… There is exemption after exemption for the activities US politicians want to “encourage”… It is so bad they now have to have special Courts where specially trained Judges preside (because the code is too complex for regular Judges) and small business owners are fined and imprisoned for missing or claiming for minor things…
High taxes rates, imcomprehensible tax codes – this in the land of the free… *shakes head*
