A poster on Kiwiblog is claiming-
“A couple of days after the earthquake the IRD was allowed into it’s offices to recover what was needed to keep taxing people, but a month later the people who fund that taxation aren’t allowed to recover their business.”
He is damn right. John Carter and Gerry Brownlee are currently using safety as a reason to deny business owners access to their business premises. How come then that this reason does not apply in respect of the government’s “businesses”?
If its true, this is just more evidence that we’re governed by hypocrites frauds and charlatans. If its true that the IRD were in there retrieving stuff then John Carter should resign right now for the clear deceit incorporated in yesterday’s press release.
“Public Safety” is a serious issue. It is not a concept to be bandied around at the convenience of politicians and petty bureaucrats.

maybe you don’t know Christchurch geography, IRD is not in red zone and is accross the road from South City Mall which re-opened a week ago.

Not surprised.
I forgot that the IRD moved in to new, purpose built premises, less than 2 years ago. Not accross Road from South City anymore.
As the new IRD building is across the road from the CTV building, I doubt your commentor is correct.

It’s probably karma. IRD have a shinny new building, ready for full steam ahead extortion. No doubt the government spent millions erecting this edifice to state power, earthquake proofed and all. There was only one flaw in the plan, there’s no one left to extort.
Why is it that in most towns in NZ the flash buildings belong to government departments. For fucks sake how many shiny towers do we need to serve 1.5 million or so tax payers, it’s all bullshit.

the flashest building in hastings is the new court house.. most popular too.
lro did correct his mistake, would be good to verify the claims.
wouldn’t be surprised though, priority. just like rent holidays for state house tenants.

I am not surprised. The IRD sucks up the Gift Duty regime from its CHCH office. The government has indicated that gift duty will be abolished from next October but a new form of leeching will undoubtedly be instigated.

Can confirm, as we are doing the detailed assessment for the old Ird tenancy.
OTOH, we can’t get drawings from Council as their building has a red sticker (Potential collapse hazard from St Elmo’s Court), so I’d say the new Ird building is on the edge of or no longer in the red zone.
