There’s no such thing as political discourse among the public any more–only lemmings waiting to be pointed in the approved direction by the media.

Redbaiter, my old blogosphere friend.
It just occurred to me that you might like to look at this thread on interest.co.nz to see me in action again somewhere. NZ is in the grip of deep forces of unreason:

“NZ is in the grip of deep forces of unreason:”
Good to know you are still alive and fighting Phil. You are an excellent debater. Not that reason ever counts for much arguing with the left.
I have given up on Kiwiblog. The comments section once had some impact but it is mainly populated by a few dozen rejects from the Trade Me message boards now. Farrar has come out of the closet as a complete left wing dickwad and (as we always knew) a raving social liberal/ progressive. Its because of people like him that we’re in this state.
The graphs he has up this morning on immigration tell the tale. Key does not offer any hope, and National is just Labour in drag. Same old same old. Too many people like David Farrar in the party when they should really be in Labour.
(Interesting discussion you refer to. I don’t read that site as I believed that moron who got fired from No Minister resides there.) (“Blog Producer” Bryan ….?)
You’re right about the unreason. Not only NZ but most of the Western World. The leftists, with a financial meltdown on the horizon, must be pleased their destructive objectives are being realised.
As Stalin once said, capitalism has been hung by its own rope. We did not fight hard enough, and too many compromised.

Thanks, Redbaiter. Farrar is not the only Kiwi by a long shot, who will default to a position of left wing liberalism under the slightest pressure – like the narrative that has followed the Wall Street crash. Almost nobody actually understands how the whole thing happened, yet they leap to pass judgements that they are not qualified to .
This includes the so called financial and economics gurus who run interest.co.nz. Farrar does not surprise me, but Bernard Hickey and his colleagues do. I wouldn’t expect Farrar to know better, but I would expect Hickey to.
Yes, Wall Street is run by opportunist crooks, but hubristic politicians and an overwhelmingly ignorant public, play into their hands. This stuff would never have gone down in a USA that was still remotely like the founders intended. It is also a fact that almost the entire western world has the same problems, only that have been even more “created by government”, than the USA’s problems, and the international left-media narrative offloads the blame for all this onto “Wall Street”. Rubbish. The Poms, NZ, Ireland, Greece, Spain etc were all in the crap anyway, thanks to liberal left government. The EU is in deep crap. California is in deep crap and is singlehandedly dragging the rest of the USA down; thanks to liberal left government in California. Without California’s housing bubble there would have been no Wall Street crisis.
As I am arguing on that interest.co.nz thread, it is Green regulations re urban growth, that are primarily responsible for all this. Most of the States of the USA are still mercifully free of these regulations, had no property bubble, and are still the most economically sound economies in the world, especially if it were not for the fallout from Califoria. Rick Perry is absolutely right to run for President on the grounds that the Texas model is what the USA needs.
“Expert” commentary even within the USA itself is mostly hopeless; completely missing these vital points. They mostly analyse their problems with statistics for the aggregate whole of the USA; as if the EU does this and fails to work out that some members are contributing the the problem to a greater extent than others.

The problems in the west are not down to capitalism. They’re down to crony capitalism, and socialism. Where left wing governments (like Labour & National) took money that did not exist and bought the favours of opportunist businessmen, and bought votes from the electorate, and eventually the reality, that all of this vote buying and cronyism could not in reality be paid for, has arrived.
Socialism is behind the financial collapses that presently plague the western world, and you’d have to be a brain damaged leftist not to see that, and not to have seen it coming years ago.

Exactly, crony capitalism, or “mercantilism” (which was the classical description of it) is the problem, along with hubristic politicians who can be sucked in by the mercantilists. And these politicians are inevitably socialists, or “right wingers in name only”. Even the Republican Party in the USA has some like this, although nowhere near as bad as here or Britain or Europe.
It is one of the successful tactics of the left, that they brand their political opponents “right wing” regardless of how far over to the left those political opponents slide over time.
George W Bush presided over the first, smaller “bailout” of Wall Street. Reagan would have told them to get stuffed. And things would have been better now, not worse as the Wall Street opportunists, pushing their luck, always made out. Why make painful reforms when there are hubristic politicians to suck in, and get bucketloads of taxpayers money passed over?

There may be an effective soundbite by mixing these elements. Crony capitalism is Communism in Fascist drag. A generalization like this is pretty accurate. But, again, it’s probably too little too late. Even were we to magically wake up every useful idiot in the world, the power seekers may have enough clout to put down any revolt. I suspect nothing short of divine intervention will save us.
