General Debate 01/03/11

Andrew Bolt has some amazing information on Victoria’s desalination plant. “Premier Ted Baillieu yesterday admitted the contract signed by the former Labor Government couldn’t be broken and the “white elephant’’ desalination plant could cost Victorians a maximum $23.9 billion. [..] The desalinated water will cost up to $13.50 a kilolitre – compared to just $1 for current supplies. A review by PriceWaterhouseCoopers shows the cost of the project will run to $19.3 billion without any water being sent to homes.

A dam of more than ample capacity and catchment was considered but rejected. Cost of the dam? $1.5 billion. Why was it rejected? The Labor Government turned the dam reservation on Gippsland’s Mitchell River into a national park, and said a dam was not a realistic proposition because “Unfortunately, we cannot rely on this kind of rainfall like we used to.”

So once again we have enormous economic damage being wrought for no good reason other than to appease the superstitious beliefs of a bunch of past their use by date watermelons. How long are we going to tolerate this rank and incredibly expensive idiocy? Really, its just getting absolutely crazy. We so desperately need to let go of the whole over-rated environmental paradigm. It is a once fashionable cause now rationally unjustified and completely unaffordable. Not only do we need to get these idiots out of our parliaments, we need to stop feeding their doctrinal rubbish into the minds of our naive and gullible young.

  1. This from Delingpole in the UK:

The renewable energy industry is helping to destroy the UK economy and drive up unemployment says a new report. For every one of David Cameron’s “green jobs” created in the renewable energy sector (mainly solar and wind), another 3.7 jobs are being lost in the real economy, says the independent study by Verso Economics.

The report is worth keeping in mind for future posts whenever watermelons and socialist talk about “creating” green jobs…

  2. Jeremy, I thought it was only 2.4(?), 3.7 is even worse!

If Western nations don’t throw off the shackles of environmental lunacy then we are going to be totally stuffed in very short order.

  3. But, but Bob Brown said that by introducing a Carbon Tax, Australia would magically become awash in “green technology” and “green jobs”. He wouldn’t lie to me, would he?

  5. From you link, Gantt:

A British court has ruled that a Christian couple cannot care for foster children because they disapprove of homosexuality.

A British court has ruled that a Christian couple cannot care for foster children because they disapprove of homosexuality.

Judges at London’s Royal Courts of Justice ruled that laws protecting gays from discrimination take precedence over the couple’s religious beliefs.

How far away are we until Christian couples will not be permitted to raise their OWN children? When will this madness end?

Consequently, how far away are we from 1 Thess 4:16 & 17 occurring … I’m sure I can hear that trump sounding!

That was a memory I had of a quote from a UK report… If my memory is correct it’s accurate, the point I believe is that, despite the range, every study of “green job creation” shows job losses… And the cause isn’t hard to figure out – when subsidies are required they have to come from taxes imposed on cheaper industries, taxes cost jobs…

The best bet for a renewable source of energy that can compete without subsidy I’ve seen is Osmosis Power Generation… It’d be perfect for NZ…

  7. Kris, the figure from Germany (can’t find a link, sorry) was 2.2 real jobs lost for every “green” job “created”. It’s a make-work scheme writ large.

  8. Spain is the best example, it was going completely for green, and they are bankrupt. Similar numbers, every green job costs at least 2 ordinary jobs, while the green jobs require huge subsidies as well. There is a good report out there by a Spanish economist setting it out in clear hard facts. I’ve lost the link, will post it if I find it again. Here’s an article about it: http://thecynicaleconomist.com/2010/05/23/leaked-spanish-report-obama%E2%80%99s-model-%E2%80%98green-economy%E2%80%99-a-disaster/
