I first came across the story of the Amish in Illinois who had for years been able to obtain firearms licenses without having their picture taken as they were given religious dispensation. However, this dispensation was recently dropped. So now, unless they are ready to change their religious ideas, the Amish cannot get a gun to hunt with, and many use this method of food provision.

Then I read a story from San Francisco, where police had forced an arrested Muslim woman to remove her head scarf.

A federal appeals court unanimously reinstated a lawsuit Tuesday filed by a Muslim woman who accused Southern California jailers of violating her religious freedom when they ordered her to take off her head scarf in a courthouse holding cell. An 11-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also said plaintiff Souhair Khatib had the right to wear the scarf unless jailers can show it was a security risk.

A trial court judge and a three-judge appeals court panel previously dismissed the lawsuit, saying holding cells aren’t covered by a federal law protecting the religious practices of prisoners.

Well damn, those Amish always were too peaceful right? Maybe if they were to fly a few hijacked planes into a few buildings, they’d be OK with no photos on their gun licences.
