I had to smile as I read this news article. Here we are in NZ arguing the right to voluntarily join a student union, while across the sea in America, the debate is whether to allow concealed carry on campus. I thought this was a particularly stark example of what depths socialism has brought us to. FOX 5 News reports
To bear or not to bear arms? That is the question of the week at George Mason University. A group calling itself Students for Concealed Carry on Campus say this is “Gun Week” at George Mason. They are trying to call attention to their plight for the right to carry concealed weapons on the university property.
Leading the charge is a former marine and current criminal justice major, Karolyn Galarza. “I have a concealed handgun permit for Virginia and I believe that I should be able to carry on campus because I have a concealed handgun permit,” Galarza said. “I don’t know why we can’t carry here to protect ourselves.”
GMU officials say they encourage debate, but will not be changing university policy which bans all weapons on GMU property. “We share that passion,” said university spokesman Dan Walsch. “So we’re all together in that and yet the question is how best to achieve that and our judgment is what it is and that’s where we disagree with their judgment.”
FOX 5 spoke to a number of GMU students on campus Monday. All were against changing the university’s gun ban.
