A couple of days ago, the Crown, represented by Chris Finlayson and Maori Affairs Minister Dr Pita Sharples, gave away $22 million of taxpayers money under a TOW settlement.
Will somebody tell me why NZers today, who were not alive at the time of the event this money is meant to compensate for, and who know nothing of what occurred, and have heard no story other than that of the complainant, should be having money taken from their hard earned wages and given to these tribalists? Given by a couple of oily scumbag politicians who couldn’t be trusted as far as you could kick them?
“Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara lost virtually all of their land, which had devastating consequences for their social, cultural, spiritual and physical wellbeing,” Dr Sharples said. “Those consequences are still felt today.”
What meaningless crap.
Components of the settlement include commercial and financial redress worth $22.1 million, including the transfer of Woodhill Forest. Cultural redress includes the return of Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara’s ancestral mountain, Atuanui/Mount Auckland, and eight other significant sites.
The Waitangi Tribunal is well known to be a fraudulent and partisan body and its findings are deeply suspicious. There should be an inquiry into the processes there and all settlements frozen until the public is satisfied that the procedures are above board. Many NZers have yet to be convinced that these claims of ownership have any real merit.
Not that any money should change hands anyway. If the tribes have a legitimate claim to land it should be returned to them, but this should be well proven and in a contested hearing, not just rubber stamped. However there is never ever going to be any case to make NZ taxpayers today pay money for perceived government misdeeds of the past. This is just theft, and weak pandering to a collection of racists and separatists by gutless politicians. In a sane country, rather than in this socialist racist basket case, it would never happen.
