This BS about “fair share” that the left and their media branch is running with at the moment irritates the hell out of me. The implication is that only the left are “fair”, or that anyone outside that political sector is a grasping selfish responsibility avoiding creep.
There’s not a better example of the dysfunctional thought patterns that typify the left as their views on what is fair and what is not. Everything they claim is fair is always utterly unfair. Leaving aside the idiocy and futility of always chasing such an ephemeral concept.
However, if the left want to talk about paying a fair share in respect of the parlous economic position most western nations find themselves in today, then its the left themselves who should be paying the bulk of it. After all, they caused it. Rush Limbaugh gets it dead right-
RUSH: Try looking at it this way. The reason that we are in the fiscal position that we’re in in this country so that people who work in government have been irresponsible, totally and 100% irresponsible. Now, being honest you could lay a majority of this blame to the Democrat Party. They live and breathe off the notion of ever-expanding government, government running more and more of people’s lives. It is they who came up with all of these entitlement programs, most of them. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, they’re not the only ones. The list is on and on and on. Why in the world should we — any of us, collectively or individually. Why should it be up to us to pay for their mistakes, which just allows them to keep on making mistakes?
Now, after Obama spends $5 trillion that we don’t have, now we get the “We gotta live within our means” speech, as though he had nothing to do with this; and now somehow all of this is the result of people who are cheating, scheming, “getting away with not paying their fair share;” which is a crock.
There is nobody of any consequence not paying their fair share. That is the wrong way to look at this entirely. This is a spending problem. It’s an irresponsible management of money problem. It is an ideological problem. It’s a lot of problems rolled into one that are not ours except for the one main mistake many of us made — sorry, many of you made — and that is, if you’ve ever voted for a Democrat, you have a greater share of blame for this than those of us who never have. I didn’t say total blame; I said greater share. If you voted for Democrats your whole life, you are the one that ought to be paying more taxes, regardless how much you make.
Damn right. As usual, El Rushbo nutshells it and nails it. Its the left wing voters who should be paying. Paying their fair share for putting us in this mess. (NZ is drowning in debt as well).
(Let’s start by putting a lien over that huge salary Helen Klark gets at the UN, working in the cronyist job she bought herself with donations of NZ taxpayer money.)

The argument from Gen X/Y is razor in its clarity.
I have a relative in Aust, 34yo, a successful builder directly employing 4 in his business.
A natural conservative voter.
Not a chance.
His argument goes like this: “I have, with luck, only a 35 year working life before I go fishing permanently. Labor and Liberals in Aust have virtually no difference in their income / capital gain tax rates….Cheech and Chong……I have 3 kids, Labor is more likely to send me cheques in the mail because of that fact, I got $8000 last year from Jooles.
The tax rates are the same, I get cheques from Labor, I vote Labor…..long may the cheques continue.”
And that’s it.

“Its the left wing voters who should be paying.”
And of course you’re correct, Red.
But we all know that it is those same left wing voters who lay claim to … no, actually believe it is their right to access money by those they claim oppress them and hold them down: You know, the product and wealth generating class that actually keeps society going and pay more than their fair share. They will never change their ways/views by choice; they have too much to lose.
The only way around this is to remove the right to vote of [long term] unemployment beneficiaries, prison inmates, government employees, and NGO employees that get most/all of their funding via government. And while that won’t eliminate all left wing voters, it would go a long way to redressing the ability of government to steal on their behalf from those who contribute greatest to our society, and would bring at least some balance back to the make-up of those who fill our halls of power.
Of course, short of revolution, this ain’t going to happen …

Absolutely right. The word “fair” has been redefined to its opposite. It is a smokescreen. Designed to suck the naiive. Alarm bells should be ringing whenever we read, see or hear that word..As you would expect it is on the front of IRD missives……………………….. Te Tari Take…… it’s our job to be fair. Huh.

..and of course its typical of the innate deceit of the left to now try and make it seem as a failure of the capitalist system, or an event that has as it root cause the greed of “big companies and multi-national corporations”, when the capitalist system has been overloaded by vote buying taxation and crippled by crony-capitalism, that perverse mix of business, government and socialists that was always going to fail.

Thinking of this concept of “fair”, I am reminded of Clayton Cosgrove complaining that the (intrinsically generous) offer made to Christchurch residents forced out of earthquake destroyed homes should be vilified because it wasn’t fair, in that it wouldn’t result in the best outcome for everyone. When a grizzling opposition would throw out an initiative on the basis that it might just be inequitable or unfair to some, it ignores the fact that it might, or will, be fair for many, and more than fair for some. They want a Rolls Royce solution on a Ford Falcon (not used Hyundai) budget. The stance is both inarguably idiotic, and intellectually bankrupt.

I am a government employee and yet I agree that they should not get to vote. It creates an immediate conflict of interest and opens the door to self serving, hidden, agendas. Most of those I work with are raving lefties and totally ignorant of social and political issues.

Yes, there has to be something missing in their intellectual make up in order to buy into it.

God, never a truer word spoken. My daughter works for IRD and as Pencarian says, “Most of those I work with are raving lefties and totally ignorant of social and political issues” since she has been in this position she has become a self righteous finger wagging PC type. Last time she phoned me she gave me a preaching session about ‘tax dodgers’ in the most nauseating self righteous manner I have ever heard from her (she’s only been in Wellington 2 years!) the indoctrination doesn’t take long eh? My poor husband is in the same position, he dare not express his conservative opinions at his place of work for fear of losing his job.

“My daughter works for IRD” I am sorry to hear that medusa, you have lost your daughter to those without souls !
Mind you, I am not sure what I do is much better. Working in the public (dis) service has driven me much further to the right than I would have been otherwise.

Pencarian, In a previous life I too was a beaurocrat, Telecom, Housing Corp and a couple of other not to be mentioned jobs, but conservatism was beaten into me at an early age.(Thank you conservative parents) My first lesson was NEVER go to union meetings! shit the stories I could tell about unios both in London and here.

Medusa, In my first job I recall the Union Secretary telling me about the virtues of communisim. He went on trips to Russia and was very open about his beliefs. That was about 28 years ago in the cold war era. People think I am making it up when I tell them this. NZ is full of marxists, most do not even realise the horrors their ideology have inflicted on the modern world. Indeed, many do not even know their ideas are marxist doctrine.
