General Debate 06/02/11

When a young Afghanistan war hero appeared before a city council, it seemed the right thing to give him a standing ovation. Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher, 26, had been awarded the George Cross for throwing himself on a Taliban hand grenade to save his comrades. He survived only because his backpack took the force of the blast. But to the horror of the rest of the council chamber, while most leapt to their feet to applaud him, two Muslim councillors remained firmly in their seats.

Salma Yaqoob and Mohammed Ishtiaq, from the Respect party, insist that their refusal to clap the Royal Marine was a point of principle. But following the meeting at Birmingham City Council on Tuesday night, fellow councillors said they had grossly disrespected the soldier. Conservative Cllr John Lines said: ‘They should be ashamed of themselves. ‘This was not the time or place to stage an anti-war protest – this man risked his life for his comrades. I was happy to give this hero a standing ovation and I have invited him to be guest of honour when we open new houses for ex-military personnel later this year.’

Councillors Yaqoob and Ishtiaq remained defiant last night. Miss Yaqoob, Respect party leader and head of Birmingham’s Stop the War Coalition, said of the ovation: ‘It was more about the politicians feeling good about themselves for sending our young men to fight for reasons that have proved to be false. I have every sympathy for our soldiers on a human level, they are only doing their jobs. But this ovation was just a big public show, it was false patriotism. Wrapping coffins in the flag and awarding medals does not make it right.’ Mr Ishtiaq added: ‘If these so-called politicians want to give a standing ovation, why don’t they go and fight themselves? What we did was out of principle.’

The George Cross is awarded for ‘outstanding bravery not involving direct contact with the enemy’. L/Cpl Croucher became the most highly decorated serving marine when he was given the medal for showing bravery in an ambush in Helmand province in 2008. During a night raid on a Taliban compound, he stepped on a tripwire, triggering a grenade. Instead of fleeing he smothered the explosion, twisting on to his back to let his rucksack take the full force, and prevented all four members of his patrol being killed. The explosion hurled him across the compound and left him stunned, bleeding from the nose and almost deaf. But within minutes he was on his feet again and demanding to be allowed to continue the patrol. He even helped set an ambush and shot dead an armed insurgent during the subsequent firefight.

The Respect party was founded by controversial former Labour MP George Galloway, who formed an uneasy coalition of anti-war campaigners and Islamic groups and successfully won himself a Commons seat in east London under the party banner. His support collapsed at the last election and he lost his seat, but there are still several Respect councillors.

  1. “sending our young men to fight for reasons that have proved to be false”

Riiiiight. So it wasn’t the taleban hosting Obama bin Laden all those years. And it wasn’t Obama bin Laden who arranged for planes to fly into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, killing 4,000 innocents.

Oh that’s right, I forgot. The left have decided it was Climate Change and Sarah Palin who were responsible.

What fucking place have scum such as these in civilised society? And who the fuck voted for them anyway? Is Birmingham a hotbed of liberal white guilt that these people are allowed onto Council? Or is it largely muslims voting for muslims?

  2. I think it was a principled stand not to stand. Notwithstanding the illegalities of the Bush invasion, the American empire has really run out of reasons for their occupation.

I still remember the patriotric journolist who was black listed for taking pictures of returning coffins. The cowardly Bush administration was really trying to hide the truth from the American people. I would say that journo is still black listed under Obama. I wouldn’t be surprosed if the soldier himself respected their decision not to stand. Hope he had a yarn with them afterwards. And I could really see a kiwi soldier doing that.

  3. David Farrar was called out this morning on Nat Radio ‘Media Watch’ for telling listeners in another programme that he had used the illegal drug ‘E’ recently in Australia, while at the same time pointing out on his blog that there should be “one law for all” when a police officer was caught talking on his cellphone.

Don’t the left know that Kiwiblog and DPF are on their side?

Blame the cowardly politicians ,especially Labour ,who pushed immigration ,diversity and multiculturalism. Not to mention their whole sale assault on every thing that made Britain great. The Empire, the Royal Navy,a small but well trained army,a sovereign independant parliament, pride and Christian values.

  5. Karl,
I heard Farrar make that comment on Mora’s show. He prefaced it by saying as the act was done abroad it wasn’t illegal in NZ(as if to make it OK) What surprises me is that a man of his age and supposed maturity would bother with drugs at all. I’m a regular over there and have said this there before,”he’s not my kind of conservative”.

  6. Wiki …. Are you a bit confused? There Americans are in Afganistan at the behest of the UN so it is not illegal, or are you deliberately trying to tie the American invasion of Iraq with the American troops in Afganistan just so you can have a go at Bush. On the second point, if you read the appropriate bits from wikileaks on Iraq you’d find that Bush was right about WMD……..not that the MSM is going to headline it, of course.

    What “American empire”, you dickhead?
“I still remember the patriotric journolist who was black listed for taking pictures of returning coffins. The cowardly Bush administration was really trying to hide the truth from the American people.”
Horse shit–the Bush Administration regarded it as an affront to the families and also stated that they wouldn’t tolerate the returning dead being used for propaganda purposes by the leftist MSM.
Your thinly-veiled anti-Americanism is both cowardly and sickening wiki.

  8. Kowtow, Farrar’s principles are wafer-thin and it’s now abundantly apparent that he is nothing more than the propaganda organ of the National Party. His blog is now almost worthless, other than to observe propaganda and spin in action.

Principle?! Don’t talk to me about Muslims having principles. They make an artform of deceiving and misleading the West and non-Muslim world about the true intentions of Islam. One only needs to look up the meaning of “Taqiyya” to see Muslims have NO LIMIT to the depths they will plumb to promote/achieve the Islamic agenda:

The word “Taqiyya” literally means: “Concealing, precaution, guarding.” It is employed in disguising one’s beliefs, intentions, convictions, ideas, feelings, opinions or strategies. In practical terms it is manifested as dissimulation, lying, deceiving, vexing and confounding with the intention of deflecting attention, foiling or pre-emptive blocking. It is currently employed in fending off and neutralising any criticism of Islam or Muslims.

Falsehoods told to prevent the denigration of Islam, to protect oneself, or to promote the cause of Islam are sanctioned in the Qur’an and Sunna, including lying under oath in testimony before a court, deceiving by making distorted statements to the media such as the claim that Islam is a “religion of peace”. A Muslim is even permitted to deny or denounce his faith if, in so doing, he protects or furthers the interests of Islam, so long as he remains faithful to Islam in his heart.

  10. I wouldn’t call myself thinly veiled at all. Listen to Ron Paul and you’ll hear him talk about the US empire with conviction and authority. If the US cut back its military spending and the world wide bases its currently running they could get themselves out of bankruptcy.

The US has proved its agenda is to be an encroaching militaristic empire seeking perpetual war which the neo con right promotes along with colluding with Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Bear Sterns to bring the US to its knees.

And don’t dare call me a lefty. I’d vote for Ron Paul in a flash. And you could never call Max Keiser who taught me this information a lefty either. All my allegiances and information is capatilist inspired. You’d be shocked how much the evil commy Patriot Act is destroying lives at the moment. And you know the facist TSA is going to be spread into the community. You know it and I know it so what are we arguing about?

We’ll need a lot more like him when we as a society realise it a choice between convert or fight…

So you have no problem with Russia and China (for example) moving into the vacuum and gaining control of the resources and people in these regions?

Like the bases they’ve maintained in Europe for half a century or more because Europeans are too spineless (and too broke after paying for their welfare states) to look after their own defence?
    That isn’t an empire.

  14. What’s more, that “encroaching militaristic empire seeking perpetual war” has brought liberty to more people and saved more lives than any other country in history, with the possible exception of Britain.
I don’t recall you ever having a good word to say about America and in my book that makes you anti-American.

  15. “So you have no problem with Russia and China (for example) moving into the vacuum and gaining control of the resources and people in these regions?”

Well Red that’s the ideology that got the US into Korea and Vietnam needlessly and that’s been proven. Mostly by the communists themselves. After the US left those souther regions, the northern regions never took them over putting a lot of egg on the face of the White House.

Anyway, I’m not a hater. I got nothing against Americans per se. But watch the Reagan vids I put up and listen to the educated commentary and history.

  16. Sorry Whikiriwhi, you didn’t answer my question. Should all the resources, precious metals, hydrocarbons, etc just be abandoned by the Americans and left for the Russian’s or the Chinese to take over? As the Chinese are doing with Africa for example.

Should all those people in Europe and Sth America and Africa and Asia just be left to their own resources, and free of any influence of freedom and democracy but be exposed to infiltration by the Red Chinese for example and eventual conversion to the kind of communist robots that exist in Nth Korea and China?

The US should just sit within its borders and allow China and/or Russia to have complete command of all the global resources they want, dominate the planet’s people and resources, so that they grow so powerful they can vanquish the US, confined to its small part of the world by Paul’s isolationist policies, whenever they choose?

Is that what you and Ron Paul want? Or are you saying it will not happen? Please answer the questions.

Should the western world refuse to engage in defence alliances and just exist each as one seperate entity. Alone without any strategic partnerships? Please answer the question.

This makes them easy meat for any major force or alliance on the left. Is this what you see as the ideal situation? Please answer the question.

  17. BTW, I watched half that video and turned it off in disgust. It is a feeble attempt to portray legitimate protest by Christians as the moral equivalence of cultural Marxism. The two are entirely different concepts and for the makers of this video to pretend not to know this makes their video unworthy of any real attention.

Not sure which vid you’re taling about.

The vid with Wilkerson and Parry is deeply insightful and professional.

As for you q’s on the US leaving a vacuum, the current START treaty , though not a be all and end all is a good sign of thawing relations.

China is certainly a huge question though there is a school of thought their bubble is about to burst and they themselves are heading to financial crisis.

In all events this site believes we are heading to a complete worldwide melt down within months and their third scenario is exactly what is playing out at this time

SCENARIO 3 – Derivatives = Weapons of Mass Financial Destruction

Bernancke has admitted the Fed engineered the the 1928 depression and financial expert Max Kaiser along with other financial analysists he interviews are all of the same mind that the US is being corrupted from the inside.

Watch his interview with Nomi Prins. She was a chief executive at Goldman Sachs and is now spilling the beans about their illegalities.

The difference however wikiriwhi, is that in Jefferson’s time you couldn’t produce a single bomb in your county that can be fired – and not stopped – that lands in my country and kills 1,000,000+ people… It makes what happens in your country and countries that share my country’s outlook, very much part of my business…

It means isolationism – while a nice thought – has been irrelevant since 1948…

So with his characteristic lack of concern for detail or his country’s best interests, the president called for Mubarak to immediately step down……

….The man who in 2009 in Cairo said, “So let me be clear: no system of government can or should be imposed on one nation by any other” was now dictating to Mubarak the kind of government Egypt should have and when it should have it.
