Henry Reardon arrives home from work to find a social gathering of his wife and her dilettante associates underway. His anniversary present to his wife of a bracelet formed from his newly developed metal is mocked. Henry’s dedication to his work is mocked. His wife and her leeching and arrogant and disapproving companions are reminders of the leftist ruling class that seeks to rule today. The metaphors in the scene seem so appropriate for today’s political condition.

I confess to having not read Atlas Shrugged, but from what I’ve heard, and judging by that clip, it’s a documentary.

Atlas Shrugs is really a fictional vehicle for Ayn Rand to explain her political views. It is full of interminably long speeches and contrived and far fetched events that make it pretty hard going unless you’re a dedicated Rand disciple. That scene above makes the movie look interesting and I hope it is. I can’t see how it could be though if they remain true to the book and have the characters giving all their speeches as it would make it a bloody long movie.

The movie does look like it will be worth watching.
I hope it is not ruined by Hollywood’s liberal left values.

I like it that they’re releasing it on tax return day in America…
Global Awareness, lol… Name worthy of any Watermelon “brainstorming” session…
Haven’t read much of Rand’s stuff, I don’t agree with her rampant Atheism and promotion of selfishness… But on economics she’s as right as they come… If they pick those parts of the book, keep it simple and short and wrap it into a lesson about the lack of morality of progressivism, it’ll be worth a watch…

I read Atlas Shrugged (for the first of many times) in 1962 (at the age of 20), and it left a lasting impression. It is not great literature; it IS a brilliant polemic. And it pisses off the lefties no end-part of its charm. I look forward to the movie; I hope that it works.

Agree with RB on hoping they leave the actual Rand conversations and speeches out of it, that would kill any movie no matter what quality actors, story or action shots. Just the 50-page John Galt speech would have everybody leaving the theatre before it was 5% through. Also, Rand likes to drive her point home by repeating it ad nauseam, not the right thing for a movie either. From the clips I’ve seen it looks decent though, if they stick to the philosophical argument it’ll have the leftist having kittens.
