Garth George, The Idiot’s Idiot

I once had a small amount of time for Garth George. I was wrong. Over the years he’s revealed himself to be just another left wing suckhole in the long line of left wing suckholes that work for the NZ Herald. He’s surpassed all previous efforts with this week’s example of pathetic far left garbage.

He starts off by bracketing ACT with Hone Harawira’s Mana Party. Two sets of crazies at alternative extremes of the spectrum is Garth’s dopey thesis. He calls the Mana Party “graspers” and in the most nauseating supplication to endless extreme left propaganda campaigns, ACT are the “greedies”.

In the same propaganda driven vein, he labels Brash “too old” at 70, and then comes the killer-

Dr Brash is last century’s man, a fanatical economic ideologue still convinced that laissez-faire capitalism is the answer to all our woes – in spite of all the evidence of its abject failure under successive governments throughout the 1990s.

You hear that my fellow free market conservatives? NZ suffered “laissez-faire capitalism” throughout the 1990s…!! What’s more, it failed.

The Herald actually pays this blustering buffoon good money to insult our intellect with this kind of patronising fifth rate political garbage. Really, one could probably find a more accurate and factual thesis in a third former’s political science exercise. This is such cliched rubbish it even insults a publication with such a damaged reputation as the Herald. Brash may be 70, but Garth George is well into his second childhood and in intellectual terms, fast approaching thirteen for the second time.

We could be reading Ann Coulter or Mark Steyn. That is if the Herald was a real newspaper that employed real writers, and not those silly old uninformed bigots such as Garth George who would be far better suited to writing advertising copy on the side of Weetbix packets.

Haha, that’s a good line RB.

  2. “Weetbix packets” – maybe that’s where he got his journalism qualification …

  3. I used to have a passing admiration for George especially during the Clark years, but he seems to have lost coherent thought. Perhaps he was always like this and just looked good beside others in the Herald.

  4. My view is that George espoused a smidgen of common sense and hence sharply contrasted with the Marxis Mob. However, on scrutiny, he doesn’t have a comprehensive framework to organize his thoughts. Stated differently, he moans and groans about issues where the leftist approach is plainly incorrect on first analysis by anybody who is prepared to engage with a modicum of skepticism. When pushed on issues that require a bit more thought or some substantive logic he falls short of the mark, and grasps back to offering silly platitudes that resound with accepted dogma, for instance: “capitalism has been shown not to work either” or “islam is a religion (and one of peace)”.

  5. As a relative newcomer to Auckland I was staggered at how appallingly green and left the Herald was. I once read George state that what he knew about economics could be written on a postage stamp and have much space to spare. Then he went on a dumb diatribe brilliantly displaying his self analysis. I stopped buying the rubbish.
I live in National heartland, but many natives seem to be only informed by the Herald and spit out the watermelon pips. (I was most surprised).

  7. Yes Cadwaller, I believe we may mean the same thing, and it conforms with what Peter mentions. I do believe that this is indeed the crux of the matter, not only in respect of GG, but of the entire press and many in the blogosphere, including DPF, a lack of perspective when it comes to economic issues and a warped conception of the meaning of fundamental terms such as “laissez faire economics” or the left-right distinction as opposed to the large v small government dimension. As far as GG and many others are concerned, I believe they seriously don’t have a clue. Sadly, I believe also that there are many also (including DPF) who are smart enough to very well understand these issues, but who, for some reason, chose to ignore, or worse, purposefully distort these important questions. To them it is about the game, not about the objective. They earn their keep by having constant disruption and argument, and will create this if necessary. Like currency traders making their living by any movement of the market, regardless what the eventual outcome is in overall economic terms.

There’s a word for that: WHORES.
