I used to do it. I’ve actually put thousands of hours into arguing the point with leftists. I was labouring under a serious misapprehension. I sincerely believed that they would be impressed by reason and logic. Now, older and wiser by a few years, I understand that its a futile exercise. Its clear to me now that the reason you cannot argue with a leftist is because their personal situation usually precludes any possibility of reason and logic having any effect.
In the first place they’re not educated. (In NZ) they’re all products of a dysfunctional education system that actually does not provide them with the means to think and consider and weigh a point. They just cannot do it, because socialist indoctrinators posing as educators have told them what to think, and completely failed to develop their critical thinking skills. When you see a leftist, you’re looking at a robot really. A flesh and blood human that has been programmed to speak and think in one way and that way only.
In the second place, they’re all the same. Same views, same chronic infatuation with socialism. What’s this mean? It means they have no reference point. They only see a very narrow part of the political spectrum and have no real knowledge of any political view outside that narrow band. No accurate perceptions. No experience. No understanding. And because they’re all the same, they can’t see these deficiencies.
For these sad deprived people, their severely crippled perspective is the default condition. Any political framework outside their limited understanding is completely incomprehensible to them. Its why when they come into contact with someone not so afflicted, the only reaction they are capable of (on most occasions) is an allegation of madness.
The sad part is they truly believe it. In their limited dark narrow political perspective, and the abject failure of their reasoning faculties, they really do think that any different way of thinking is an indication of madness. Lord Monckton is mad. Sarah Palin is Mad. Colin Craig is mad. The Tea Partiers are mad. For just a few examples.
Reckon I’m wrong? Just look at what they say, and especially what they write in the blogosphere. Their typical and common and regular reaction is always to mock those who don’t share their limited viewpoint with allegations of insanity. Look around and check off how many times the left state their opponents are mad, insane, batshit crazy etc etc. They do it all the time.
So, its not that leftists won’t argue. Won’t understand. Won’t give you cogent answers to your questions. Won’t debate. They actually can’t. So no matter how hard you try to reason with them, they are never going to get it. They just cannot. And its not that they’re mad, its just that they’re mentally crippled. Like half their brain has been injected with some kind of permanently numbing serum.
Next time you have a difference of opinion with a leftist, see how long it takes before they start calling you crazy. Its a sign that at that point, your argument has traveled outside the boundaries of their severely limited comprehension. Sad circumstance really. A society that fails to educate its young is doomed to extinction. We’re a long way down that road. The left wing blogosphere suggests a long long way.

Came to the same conclusion some time ago.
Thought it was me but I know better now.Trying to maintain ones sanity is especially hard when you read the screeds of rubbish from all directions on media, blogs etc. What makes it worse is the realisation that those you thought were pervasive are not and those you thought you could trust, you can’t.
Had a conversation with an aged friend tonight who asked ‘what is happening in this world?’ and he always has the answers.

“What is happening in this world?” is actually explained by the pervasiveness of nonsense. Think of the nonsense as chaff in a MIRV. The bomb is more likely to get to its target when the enemy scatters enough puffs of aluminum foil to saturate your radar. It overloads your detection sensors and reduces the effectiveness of your network of defenses. Nonsense is the chaff of those aiming to enslave us.

Very well put, Redbaiter. I’ve come to the same conclusion: not a brain cell between the lot of them.
I take the trouble on my blog to set down a carefully-reasoned train of thought, only for some moron to attempt to derail the train with an explosive accusation, long on heat and short on light, invariably some variation on why I had the temerity to be born..
I think the best strategy when confronted with one of these incendiary one-trick ponies is simply to say, “Come back when you’re older.”

I consistently make a distinction between contemporary liberals and the Left (which mean HARD Left to me). There are many reformed liberals who are now hard line conservatives or libertarians or non-labeled antileftists. Given the major point you made just this week about divide and conquer that the Left has used to make its advances, I imagine what you are saying that it is too late to bother arguing any longer with liberals too.
The thing is, the Left is now so revealed of its sinister intentions, never in my long lifetime have their been people who are willing to can them all. It can be supremely dangerous to not be willing to the eventually awakening sheep for reasons like we saw in Zimbabwe’s last election. When we do not talk to each other, the ease of sustaining fraudulent elections becomes easier. The lying media will continue to give voice to ever fewer liberals and either pretend conservatives do not exist, or put spotlights time and again on “conservatives” of their choosing (either stupid or threatening or racist or selfish or any combination). It’s the inherent decency of most conservatives, with their live and let live ethic (even social conservatives are less intrusive on individuals both by law and custom than the left has become by law and PC) that, when properly expressed on a personal level, undermines the propaganda machinations.
For me, I treat hardline Leftists as you express. There is no sense in arguing with them except on the side so we can get a word in edgewise so that the uninformed can judge our arguments are superior to theirs. They know what they’re really doing. Like I analogized above, such chaff nonsense as they promulgate even after proven wrong amounts to their mounting a campaign of lies.
I guess its my own wish for myself that I pass along to you and your readers. Despite the near overwhelming barrage of nonsense (chaff) put into the air and kept in flight by the Left, I come here trying to offer you some strength to fight the frustration that Agency of Lies is in business to instill in us all. “Never give in, never give in, never; never; never; never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense”.

Yep, I figured that one out some time ago.

Normally, that would probably be true, however many leftists just seem to get worse as they get older. Its like there is a threshold of common sense, and if you don’t cross it by a certain time in your life, you’re doomed never to cross it and instead to forever wander subliminally in the lost world of the left.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve been sounding the alarm on bad actors claiming to be on the right.
I don’t expect anything more from the Left because I view them as misanthropic wolves in sheep’s clothing. It’s the bad actors who claim to be on the Right who are treacherous — it’s only they who can and have knifed us in the back. That’s one reason why CR and this blog exist because you can’t get a fair hearing at the other “right-wing” blogs.
When will I hear reports about what the “moderates” consider extreme left? I saw where one clown wrote, shortly after vilifying KG or Kris K (I don’t recall, and it really does not matter since it was typical), that the Red Chinese and FARC were faded threats compared to you. Something like that.
I’d rather speak with a liberal who is starting to wake up than a “moderate” who’ll lick the boots of the Leftist that would see him dead before granting him some recognition for what was left his manhood.

@Pascal
The whole problem Pascal is there is so little real push back from forces who portray themselves as RW. In the main, they let the left set the agenda, and do nothing to roll back left wing policies when elected. What we need to do is make the left feel as anxious (or more anxious) about their position as they make us feel. Otherwise, we’re losing.
The right has to demonstrate a lot more push back.

I agree RB. We are held back by the moderates. Were the Right permitted to speak for itself instead, alone, the “ooh, we are not like them” moderates would have no voice except with the Left where they belong. A classical liberal resurgence would provide a place for many libs in a very conservative milieu of live and let live. The Leftists and Statists would have only the ruling class at that point. To get the push back, what is needed is a stark realignment, somethng very different from what we have. There’s so much ignorance abouding (chaff again), much of it willful (rapidly losing the relative security of the past will change that), it would be difficult but not impossible. The Right must think in terms of realignment without the treacherous moderates if it wants to do what you’re saying.

“I AM RIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG”…. Is the default position for a leftist to argue from.
Nothing will shift them from this position. Oh yes, they will listen tolerantly, as if to a child, (Gillard is good at this), but the default position is hardwired into their brain. Goff supplies a perfect example of this position with his present stoush with the SIS. “The default position” has the magical ability to deny the evidence, suspend reason and logic. This incident will sink into a morass of trivia and semantics but “the default position” will be defended at all costs.

Yes! A hell of a lot more. Conservatives have been too easily cowed, too often suckered into letting the left set the terms of the debate. Too often they self-censor in order to avoid the shit-storm.
A huge, upraised middle digit to the lot of ’em, I say.

Nah Moist, they have two other default arguments:
(1) YOU’RE STUPID
and
(2) SHUT UP
That’s it. It’s why they love Climate Change so much – they tell us they’re right, and it will take 1,000 years for us to prove them wrong (unlike most of their ridiculous notions, which can be decomposed in about 1,000 nanoseconds).

I used to think exactly the same thing, about Redbaiter and his ilk. How ironic.
These days I don’t think RB is stupid. I just think he’s got different values to mine. People choose what arguments are convincing to them based on how well that argument aligns with their values.

If you’re a leftist, you don’t have “values”, just a set of attitudes and emotions programmed into you by what’s laughingly referred to as the “education system”.
